Dedication of the E. Jay Carlson Community Development Building

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. (Sept. 5, 2019) –The Charlotte County Commission has scheduled a dedication ceremony at 2:30 p.m., Sept. 20, 2019 for the E. Jay Carlson Community Development Building, 18400 Murdock Circle, Port Charlotte. The dedication is to commemorate the completion of the addition and remodeling of the building and its renaming.

The dedication will take place at 18500 Murdock Circle, Port Charlotte, Fl in Room 119

Carlson passed away on Dec. 7, 2018. He served as president of the Florida Home Builders Association and the Charlotte DeSoto Building Industry Association. Carlson was a third-generation builder who moved to Port Charlotte in 1975. Following in the footsteps of both his father and grandfather, Jay became a building contractor and joined the local builders association.

Starting in the early 1980s, Jay worked to ensure the Charlotte County chapter of the Five County Builders and Contractors Association made a smooth transition to becoming its own local association. After securing a charter from the National Association of Home Builders, the Charlotte Builders and Contractors Association began addressing governmental issues and organizing committees necessary to run an association. As 1989 president of the Charlotte-DeSoto Building Industry Association, Jay began to turn his focus to representing Florida through the Florida Home Builders Association. Worker’s compensation issues attracted his attention and he helped reform the system.

Carlson served on and/or chaired more than 40 committees, including the Policies & Procedures Task Force, Worker’s Compensation Task Force, Nominating Committee, Governmental Affairs and Past Presidents’ Council.

As 2009 president of the FHBA, Carlson traveled the state visiting local associations to bring information and resources to members during the economic downturn. He worked closely with his fellow senior officers to restore the association’s deteriorating financial condition.

Gov. Rick Scott appointed Carlson as chairman of the Florida Building Commission. His focus was a “common sense” approach to the Florida Building Code, keeping public safety first and a watchful eye on unnecessary and costly codes and regulations. 
In 2016, Carlson was inducted into the Florida Housing Hall of Fame for unwavering dedication and improvements he made to the building industry locally and throughout Florida. His legacy will continue through his wife Gina and the fourth generation of builders, sons Jacob and John and his building industry family.
